Sheryl Lee Ralph Remembers Sidney Poitier’s Early Support: ‘I Expect Great Things from You’
Image
Emmy-winning actress Sheryl Lee Ralph received the Sidney Poitier Icon Tribute at the Gotham Television Awards June 2. The “Abbott Elementary” star has a special history with the tribute’s namesake.

“It’s a very full circle moment, because quite literally Mr. Poitier opened the door to Hollywood for me by casting me in my first film — ‘A Piece of the Action,’” Ralph told IndieWire on the red carpet ahead of the ceremony.

The 1977 crime comedy both starred and was directed by Poitier. Ralph played a supporting role in the movie, which also featured James Earl Jones. After this appearance, Ralph began scoring guest spots on popular TV show such as “Good Times” and “Wonder Woman,” before landing her Tony-nominated role in the 1981 Broadway musical “Dreamgirls.” Since then, Ralph has been a film, television and stage staple, but she professes that none of her success would have been possible without Poitier.

Danny DeVito: ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ Is Like ‘I Love Lucy’ on ‘Acid’
Image
The gang just might be going back in time: Danny DeVito couldn’t help but compare his beloved sitcom “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” to another iconic TV series, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz’s ’50s comedy “I Love Lucy.”

DeVito told Variety while in discussion with Colin Farrell for “Actors on Actors” that after 17 seasons of “It’s Always Sunny,” he still finds the show to be as fresh as ever. “I always looked at it as ‘I Love Lucy’ on acid,” he said. “You could do anything you wanted.”

DeVito cited just how different “It’s Always Sunny” is to filming the 1992 feature “Batman Returns” in which he played villain Oswald Cobblepot Aka the Penguin. Farrell gives his own take on the character, now named Oz Cobb, in Max series “The Penguin,” which was a spinoff of Matt Reeves’ 2022 film “The Batman.”

‘Jeopardy!’ Host Ken Jennings Reveals His Summer Plans as Game Show Winds Down
Image
Jeopardy! Season 40 is coming to a close quickly with its season finale set to air on Friday, July 26. Although the game show airs throughout most of the summer, host Ken Jennings is starting his summer early as he finished filming all of the episodes for the season. Filming typically ends in the middle to end of May, as Season 39 did, according to Deadline. On Friday, May 30, Ken Jennings wrote “Self-care: instead of scrolling social media, I’m going to spend the next month obsessively checking the bidding on David Lynch’s golf clubs,” on his Instagram. The Jeopardy! host shared a screenshot of the golf clubs, when the auction ended (June 18), and the current bid ($450). However, the site estimated that the golf clubs would go for $600 to $800. At the time of publication, the current bid is $1,500. About the set, the site reads, “A set of golf clubs with accompanying bag,...

‘SNL 50’ Becomes Most-Watched Season in Three Years, Hitting 8.1 Million Average Viewers After One Week
Image
“Saturday Night Live” just came off of its most-watched season in three years.

Season 50 hit an average of 8.1 million viewers according to Live + 7 data from Nielsen, meaning that seven days of viewing per episode were accounted for. That marks an increase of 12% compared to Season 49, in addition to representing the highest average since Season 47, which aired from the fall of 2021 to the spring of 2022.

This season’s average is especially impressive when considering that it does not account for the massive viewership of “SNL50: The Anniversary Special,” which aired on Feb. 16 to 14.8 million viewers. That total increased to 22.8 million after 35 days of viewing across platforms,...

‘The Studio’ and ‘Hacks’ Are Two of the Best Shows Ever About Hollywood — But Are They Too Inside or Ptsd-Inducing?
Image
Hollywood seems to always take that cliché “write what you know” to heart when it comes to producing scripts about Hollywood. I enjoy those tales, of course, but that’s because my chosen profession is to report on this fascinating business. There’s clearly enough money, creativity, mystery, farce, scandal, glamour and spectacle for us to cover every single day at Variety. And all of the stuff that makes for good copy also makes for entertaining TV and film plot lines.

So perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised that three of this year’s biggest Emmy comedy contenders play in that space: “Hacks,...

Image
Lee Jung-jae may feel satisfied by the upcoming “Squid Game” series finale, but he’s still worried about how fans will react to the end of the hit Netflix show.

Lee told The Hollywood Reporter while at the Tudum 2025 event that the third and final season of “Squid Game” will have a few twists. “We are going to be releasing quite soon, I am very nervous. I know that a lot of you out there are curious about what’s going to happen in Season 3, but all of us are more curious about how much you’re going to enjoy it,” Lee said. “So I can’t wait, I’m very nervous.”

“Squid Game” Season 3 premieres June 27 on Netflix. Lee previously won an Emmy in 2022 for his lead performance in the series created by Hwang Dong-hyuk. “Squid Game 2” premiered in December 2024 and debuted to 68 million views in its first week,...

Mountainhead Is Too Cruel (and Too Real) to Live Up to Succession — Grade It in Our Poll!
Image
Succession is one of the past decade’s very best TV shows: a razor-sharp and insightful portrait of an obscenely wealthy family as they insult each other to their faces before stabbing each other in the back. So when Succession creator Jesse Armstrong revealed he’s writing and directing a new original movie for HBO, I was excited. Well, that movie is here — Mountainhead (now streaming on Max) — but sadly, it just stands as a massive miscalculation. As a follow-up to Succession, it fails, in spectacular fashion.

Mountainhead takes the key elements we remember from Succession — the ridiculous displays of...

Brett Goldstein Reveals How His Role in Bill Lawrence-Donald Faison Pilot ‘Space Turk’ (?!) Led to Ted Lasso
Image
Before he landed his breakout role as gruff footballer Roy Kent on Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso, future two-time Emmy winner Brett Goldstein was already in Bill Lawrence’s orbit: In 2017, the Scrubs mastermind cast the British comedian opposite Donald Faison in Spaced Out, an NBC workplace sitcom that never saw the light of day.

On Saturday, I had the honor of moderating the Bill Lawrence & Friends panel at Atx TV Festival in Austin, Texas — a panel that also featured Zach Braff (Scrubs), Josh Hopkins (Cougar Town), Phil Dunster (Ted Lasso) and Charly Clive (who stars opposite Dunster and Steve Carell...

Image
Renée Zellweger admitted she had “a hard time” when she first met her costar Hugh Grant in “Bridget Jones’ Diary” because she was “such a fan.”

“I was so nervous, I just didn’t want to make a jerk out of myself,” she revealed. “I didn’t succeed.” She noted that in college, she lived above an independent movie theater and would see all the British film that came through, including “Maurice” and “Impromptu.”

“I just thought, ‘Gosh he’s so handsome!’ And now I’m going to do a movie with him?” Zellweger said.

“Some of what I will tell you is fact,” Oscar Isaac intones in the opening moments of the new teaser trailer for Academy Award winner Guillermo del Toro’s highly anticipated Frankenstein adaptation, which premiered on May 31 at Netflix Tudum 2025: The Live Event. “Some is not. But it is all true.” The truth of this particulartale is in the eye of the beholder — whether that’s the eye of Victor Frankenstein (Isaac), or the misbegotten creature (Jacob Elordi) he’s created. You can see the full teaser above.

“This has been, for me, the culmination of a journey that has occupied most of my life,” del Toro told the crowd during the live event. “I first read Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein as a kid and saw [star of the 1931 adaptation] Boris Karloff in, what became for me, an almost religious state. Monsters have become my personal belief system.”

Image
The third annual National Game Show Day took place on Sunday, June 1. Stars of The Price Is Right and Let’s Make a Deal were asked which game show, not their own, they would like to compete on. Fremantle celebrated the tenth anniversary of Buzzr, which is the company’s retro game show channel, and aired more than 300 new-to-buzzr episodes of game shows, including Tpir, Match Game, and Classic Concentration. “If you could be on another other game show, which one would you choose?” the hosts, models, and announcers were asked. The Price is Right‘s model Rachel Reynolds said, “Besides Tpir, I would be on Family Feud.” Fellow model Manuela Arbelaez also said she would want to be on Family Feud, so maybe a The Price Is Right team on Celebrity Family Feud is on order. “I feel like they have such a fun time, so I would be in for that,...

Image
[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Your Friends & Neighbors Season 1 finale.] Season 1 of Apple TV+‘s Your Friends & Neighbors has come to a close, but fret not because a second season is already on the way, and the finale teased as much in its final moments. Jon Hamm‘s disgraced ex-hedge fund worker, Andrew “Coop” Cooper, had found himself at the center of a murder investigation after incriminating evidence was found around the home of his former fling, Sam (Olivia Munn). Her ex-husband, Paul (Jordan Gelber), had been found dead in the house while she was out of town and after Coop had broken in as he’d begun robbing his neighbors earlier in the season. But the mystery behind Paul’s death was finally solved when an autopsy hinted that he’d been shot a few times after he’d died. After breaking into Sam’s house to search for clues, Coop uncovered a suicide note, ...

‘The Pitt’: Will Patrick Ball’s Langdon Be Back for Season 2?
Image
With The Pitt cast and crew getting ready to get back to work on the hit HBO Max show — director Damian Marcano told TV Insider they’re getting going soon — there are several questions up in the air, including whether or not some characters, including Dr. Langdon (Patrick Ball), will be back. Based on what we learned from executive producers R. Scott Gemmill and John Wells after the Season 1 finale, Season 2 could be a major shift for him. In the middle of Season 1, Gemmill told us that they were thinking of having the next shift be Langdon’s first back after rehab. It was in Episode 10 that Robby (Noah Wyle) discovered that his resident was an addict and had been stealing pills. He sent him home, only for Langdon to return to help out during the mass casualty incident after a shooting at Pittfest overwhelmed the Ed. Robby, in the finale after the chaos,...

How ‘The Studio,’ ‘Yellowjackets,’ ‘Monsters’ and ‘White Lotus’ Make Bad Behavior Appealing
Image
If you analyze the list of reprehensible acts committed by Shauna on “Yellowjackets” – from everyday betrayals of those closest to her to serious crimes – you can safely say that she is an objectively horrible person who should be serving a long stretch in prison.

But not if you’re Melanie Lynskey, the actor who’s played the character on the Showtime series for the past three seasons.

“I feel so the opposite of that,” says Lynskey when confronted with the idea that Shauna is a horrible person. “It’s so easy for me to find the humanity in her.”

Finding the humanity in a character,...

Image
There was another Bonus Round loss on Wheel of Fortune as the season winds down. A contestant, who has been a teacher for over 30 years, lost out on taking home $70,000 after fans deemed the puzzle “impossible.” Karen Binge, from Aliso Viejo, California, played against Santio Cupon, from Malden, Massachusetts, and Trish Diaz, from Slidell, Louisiana, on Friday, May 30. Binge has been teaching at Tustin Ranch Elementary for 34 years and comes from a line of teachers. Cupon, a drag queen under the name Landa Plenty, solved the first Toss-Up for $2,000. However, Binge took the lead after solving the first puzzle — “Flying A Shark-Shaped Kite” — for $3,600. She also picked up the Million Dollar Wedge on that round. The game show contestant also solved the “Before and After” Mystery Round puzzle — “Captain America Ferrera” — giving her $17,450. Nic Pizzolatto Says Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson Are ‘Open’ to Reprising Their ‘True Detective’ Roles
Image
It’s no mystery that Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson have become frequent collaborators after starring in and executive producing “True Detective” together. Now, original series creator Nic Pizzolatto is teasing that the acting duo might return to the hit HBO series more than 10 years since first starring together in it.

Pizzolatto, who served as an executive producer on “True Detective” Season 4 but has not written for the show since his HBO deal expired after Season 3, said during the “Nothing Left Unsaid” podcast that he is toying with another “story” involving McConaughey and Harrelson’s respective characters, Rust Cohle and Martin Hart. Pizzolatto, McConaughey, and Harrelson recently reunited for a January 2025 ad for True to Texas, with McConaughey and Harrelson back as their “True Detective” characters.

“I actually have another story for [characters] Cohle and Hart that, who knows, maybe we’ll do it one day,” Pizzolatto said, adding that they...

Season 3 of The Lincoln Lawyer may have left everything up in the air in its shocking finale — but you can breathe a sigh of relief, because Mickey Haller (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo) isn’t the kind of guy to leave you hanging on that cliff forever. Season 4 is officially filming in Los Angeles.

‘The Lincoln Lawyer’: Cobie Smulders Joins Season 4 in Mystery Role
Image
The Lincoln Lawyer ended its third season with a major cliffhanger, one that leaves its main character, Mickey Haller (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), in a very precarious position. The series premiered on Netflix in 2022, following Mickey; he doesn’t exactly run his practice out of the back of his town car (he has an office), though his vehicle is an important aspect of his life. But in Season 4, he’s the one who’s going to need legal representation, and there are several new characters joining with links to that as well as other parts of what’s to come. There are also new characters joining about whom we have no details, like Cobie Smulders‘. Her casting was announced on Monday, June 2. So what we do we know about the drama’s future? Read on. Has The Lincoln Lawyer been renewed for Season 4? Yes! Production is slated to begin in February in Los Angeles.
